It filter-feeds on algae and brine shrimp, and the pigments in that diet bleed into its feathers over years — the color is a record of everything it has eaten. It stands on one leg to conserve heat, sleeps that way, and gathers in colonies that can run to the thousands. A body written by its own appetite.
